The first piece to the compound,
Small, Metal Storage was a
renovation completed in 2004.
The 2-story, corrugated Cor-Ten
steel wrap and the translucent
polycarbonate siding retains a
contextual identity with the wood
and foliage of the neighborhood.
Cor-Ten’s oxidized surface
forms a protective coating and
needs no painting or frequent
maintenance. The design
cleared out the crannies to
make each floor into a wide-
open space and brought light
into the backyard-facing east
facade with large windows and
translucent Polycarbonate walls.
The open plan of the house
makes the space feel more
expansive while the white
finishes reflect light throughout.
White paint, which requires only
one coat than color, was a
money-saving strategy. One
side of the house is a functional
wall that concentrates the
utilities such as kitchen, bath
and stair. On the opposing side,
indirect light falls from a skylight
through the slotted opening in
the second floor.
